Overview

Paul was in prison when he when he wrote this letter of encouragement to Timothy who is a church pastor in Ephesus. He assures him of his continued prayer and support and reminds him of his spiritual responsibilities.

Paul warns Timothy that his ministry will come under attack from false teachers but he has Paul’s example and God’s word to protect and guide him

Most of Rome was destroyed by fire by Nero in AD 64. Nero blamed the Christians and outlawed the "new religion" When Paul was first imprisoned he was under house arrest and could be visited but that was before the fire. Now Paul was imprisoned again but this time he was in a cell and regarded as an evildoer. From this cell he wrote to Timothy in AD 66
